More than an operation
In 2021, my father was diagnosed with cancer. We tried a few hospitals before someone told us about Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. We travelled there, and the doctors told us he would need surgery.
I was 20 years old. I did not know Mumbai or how a hospital that size worked. That is when I met Dr. Anup. I assumed a surgeon would appear before the operation and disappear after it. I was wrong.
Dr. Anup did not only treat my father. He sat with me and explained what was happening, what came next and how to navigate a hospital that sees thousands of patients a day. In the middle of all that scale, he made time for us like we were family.
I stayed in Mumbai with my father for nearly three months. Dr. Anup performed the surgery beautifully, and he never stopped standing by us.
It has been almost five years since my father recovered. Today he is doing well and running his business again. I wanted to give Dr. Anup something he would remember, so I drew his portrait by hand. That sketch carried my father’s life, my family’s happiness and everything we feel for him.
Even now, when we return for follow-up, Dr. Anup remembers my father’s name and guides us with the same warmth.
