When does a mouth ulcer need specialist attention?

Persistence matters

Many mouth ulcers are harmless and heal. A sore that does not heal, a persistent red or white patch, unusual bleeding, a growing lump or ongoing pain should be examined by a doctor or dentist. These findings can have non-cancerous causes, but a direct assessment is the safest way to understand them.

Other changes to notice

A new neck lump, difficulty swallowing, an unexplained voice change, jaw swelling or persistent throat discomfort also deserve medical attention. Symptoms alone cannot diagnose cancer.

What happens at a consultation

The first visit usually begins with a detailed history and examination of the mouth, throat and neck. Depending on the finding, the next step may include imaging, endoscopy or a tissue test. Bring previous reports and scans if you already have them.
